The Friends of Coon Lake will host its first annual ice fishing contest Saturday, Jan. 25.
The event is scheduled for 12:30-3 p.m. that day between the channel and the Thielen boat access at Thielen Boulevard and County Road 22 (Viking Boulevard), which is four miles east of Highway 65.
If inclement weather cancels the event, the alternative date is Saturday, Feb. 8.
Those who register ahead of time pay $10 per adult. The cost to sign up the day of the event is $15. A ticket includes free admission for one child.
To register ahead of time, mail names, addresses, phone numbers and the appropriate amount of money to Barb Bouljon, Coon Lake Improvement Association, P.O. Box 54, East Bethel, MN 55011.
Stop at EJ’s Bar between 10 a.m. and noon on the day of the event (Jan. 25) to pick up registration materials. Those who sign up the day of the event must also register at EJ’s Bar, which is located at 4832 Viking Blvd. NE in Wyoming.
Each participant can only use one line.
Bait will be available at Go For It and Corner Express, which are both on County Road 22, and at Coon Lake Market in the Coon Lake beach area.
Hot dogs, soup, hot chocolate and bottled water will be available for purchase.
Prizes will be handed out during the event. Those who catch the longest pan fish, northern, bass and walleye will receive $100 each. Harvest of walleye is limited to over 17 inches. A $50 prize will be given for the smallest game fish, excluding walleyes.
In addition to merchandise prizes awarded throughout the contest, a grand prize of $200 will be awarded to a contest participant after the fishing prizes have been awarded. You must be present to win and prizes must be claimed immediately following the contest.
