The Anoka-Hennepin Educational Foundation and Coon Rapids Rotary Club are co-sponsoring a writing contest for all Anoka-Hennepin students in grades one through five.
This year’s theme is “my favorite place.”
Students are encouraged to tell a story about a place where they feel most comfortable and happy, and why they love it so much. They should write about something that happened there to make it so special, including details such as sounds and smells that describe the place. Student writers are also encouraged to write about their feelings and emotions when in their favorite place, and to explain why the place makes a difference in their life. When finished writing, students should read the story to someone else. Can they feel how special this place is? Can they feel the emotions?
Inspiration for stories about a special place can be found in these works: “Your Own Secret Place” by Byrd Baylor and Peter Parnall, “A Quiet Place” by Douglas Wood, “Tea With Milk” by Allen Say, “This Place in the Snow” by Rebecca Bond and “The Best Place” by Susan Meddaugh.
Judges will look for an imaginative title; an organized beginning, middle and ending; interesting details that help tell the story; colorful word pictures; correct spelling and punctuation; originality; and insight.
All entries are limited to 500 words with writing on one side of the paper. Each entry must have a cover sheet of notebook or typing paper.
Cover sheets must list the student’s name, grade, school, teacher’s name, home address, home phone number and story title.
Names should not be on the stories. Binders and folders will not be accepted.
Entries not meeting these requirements will be disqualified. Illustrations will not be considered during judging.
Entries from grades one and two will be judged together; entries from grades three, four and five will be judged by grade level. Students are allowed one entry each.
Prizes will be awarded in these four categories: first prize $25, second prize $15 and third prize $10. There will be a maximum of three honorable mention prizes of $3 in each category.
Entries must be postmarked by midnight Friday, March 28 and received by Tuesday, April 1.
