Back to the 1950s, 1960s at sock hop

It was back to the 1950s and 1960s at Sand Creek Elementary School, Coon Rapids, Jan. 25.

The Coon Rapids Snowflake Association hosted the annual community sock hop at the school for two hours late Saturday afternoon  and early evening in the school gymnasium.

Participants were invited to dress up in their favorite 1950s and 1960s attire – notably poodle skirts for the girls – and dance to the music of disc jockey Eric Christensen of Eclectic Entertainment with DJ E.

Christensen, with a background in both small and large market radio, has more than 10 years of experience in broadcasting and special event services.

Among those dancing at the sock hop were Kelly Dehn and her son Taylor, 4, (left) and Val Kennedy and Mia Dehn, 2 1/2 (right).

Miss Coon Rapids Kayla Brown and Miss Coon Rapids Outstanding Teen Brianna Smith were on hand dressed appropriately for the occasion, so were the 2013 Coon Rapids Junior Royalty and the 2014 junior royalty contestants.

Participants received glow in the dark necklaces,  there were door prizes and concessions were available.

The event was free, but people were asked to bring a donation of children’s books or hats and mittens.
