Skiers tested by fresh snow on state course

Andover senior Maddie McKeefry moved up 19 places with a stellar classic race to close out her Nordic ski career for the Huskies with a 29th place finish in the state Nordic ski meet at Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik Feb. 13.

Anoka senior Lindsey Gast placed 71st and Coon Rapids junior Kaitlyn Benson was 89th.

McKeefry’s teammate, junior Alexis Pearson placed 101st out of 120 skiers.

Irondale’s Mattie Watts built enough of a lead from the skate race to hold off a hard-charging performance by Burnsville senior Vivian Hett to win the pursuit title by six seconds.

Wayzata beat out Armstrong for the team title by 35 points with Stillwater third, one point back from Armstrong.

The Andover boys placed seventh in the eight-team field with 315 points or 65 points behind champion Forest Lake.

Bloomington Jefferson sophomore Zak Ketterson won the pursuit title by nine seconds.

Spring Lake Park senior Jake Ajax placed 21st in 34:40.3 to lead the ABC Newspapers area skiers. Andover’s Ian Mead ws 36th in 36:01.1 and teammate Lucas Heib was 40th in 36:11.4.

Andover’s other team-score finishers were sophomore Samuel Anderson in 87th and senior Erik Larson in 89th, six seconds apart.
