A new assisted living and memory care home for senior citizens is open in Blaine.
Edgewood Senior Living has over 40 locations in Minnesota, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, but this is the first Twin Cities metro location for the 22-year-old business.
The one-story building includes 34 assisted living and 25 memory care units with options ranging from one to two bedrooms to studio apartments, according to Lori Hanson, the executive director of this Edgewood community located at 12450 Cloud Drive NE.
The dining hall is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., which will also have specialized menus for residents who would prefer something other than what is being served during meal times. Some of the community amenities include a pub, salon, chapel, library and a fitness center, according to Toby Mullenger, marketing director.
Edgewood partnered with Bluestone Physician Services in Blaine so its staff will regularly visit this Edgewood community for check-ups or physical therapy. Edgewood also plans to invite dentists, eye doctors and podiatrists.
A life enrichment director will have activities planned every day of the week that will be tailored to the different needs of the residents, Mullenger said.
If residents have their own doctor or would like to take a shopping or entertainment field trip, Edgewood has its own van to transport residents.
“We’re looking at quality of life,” Mullenger said when asked why it has become important for new senior living communities to offer so many amenities.
Edgewood encourages residents to set up their rooms with items to remind them of home and to decorate outside their rooms as well. For instance, display cases outside each memory care unit gives residents a place to put photos and other favorite items they have collected in the past. This serves as a way for residents to get to know each other, but also a reminder of positive moments and people in their lives.
Margie Downs, 92, called Brooklyn Center home for about 50 years until she had a bad fall. After recovering in a hospital, she decided to move into an assisted living apartment in the new Edgewood community in Blaine because family would be close by. Her physical therapist from Allina continues to meet her at her new home.
“Everything here is like being in your own home or a hotel,” Downs said. “I just love it here. Everyone is so nice and I feel so at home.”
Rates vary depending on which room option and level of service a resident needs. For example, the monthly rate for a one-bedroom, 506-square-foot assisted living apartment starts at $3,695 but there are additional service package options that range from $300 to $900 a month, no matter which apartment size option is chosen. The rate for a one-bedroom, 347-square-foot memory care unit starts at $5,600 a month.
