Prison for Blaine man who sexually assaulted a young child

A Blaine man was sent to prison by an Anoka County District Court judge Feb. 25 for sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl.

Mickey Dean Sams, 61, was given a 111-month prison term, with credit for five days served. He had entered a guilty plea Dec. 16, 2013 to a felony criminal sexual conduct in the second degree charge.

Sams was originally charged with five felony offenses, but two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one felony charge of using minors in a sexual performance or pornographic work and one felony count of possession of pornographic work involving minors were dismissed at sentencing as part of the plea agreement.

At the time the new charges were filed, Sams was on probation for 25 years after being convicted in 1997 of a second-degree criminal sexual conduct charge involving a child.

According to the new complaint, the investigation began in Isanti County in January 2013 following a report of the sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl by a relative, Sams, at a family gathering that involved sexual touching while he took photos of her.

During a forensic examination and interview, the child told investigators that this type of incident took place whenever she saw Sams, including an incident at his home in Blaine over Thanksgiving 2012 when he took photos of her and sexually touched and assaulted her.

Investigators executed search warrants on Sams’ phone, where many photos had been deleted, but they were retrieved and clearly identified a juvenile female with her underwear revealed and an adult hand sexually touching her; some of them showed the face of the six-year-old girl.

The girl’s mother identified the girl in the photos as being her daughter and the physical surroundings of the photos as Sams’ residence in Blaine.
