East Bethel council tables discussions on changes

The East Bethel City Council March 5 abruptly tabled any discussion on two agenda items with no explanation.

Only Councilmember Heidi Moegerle voted against tabling the items.

The first item was a recommendation by city staff to amend the city’s traffic and motor vehicles ordinance in response to complaints about noise and hours of operation of dirt bikes.

After City Administrator Jack Davis read the proposed amendments, Mayor Robert DeRoche immediately made a motion to table the issue to a work session.

Tom Ronning seconded DeRoche’s motion.

“Why?” asked Moegerle. “Can you clarify your motion? I don’t understand why we need to come back again.”

City Attorney Mark Vierling told DeRoche he didn’t have to clarify his motion.

“I’m not going to,” DeRoche said.

The next agenda item was a recommendation by city staff to amend the city’s ordinance on recreational vehicles and travel trailers, in response to a request from a property owner who wants to place a recreational camping trailer on her property.

Again, DeRoche made a motion to table the issue to a work session. Ronning seconded the motion.

The work session has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 19 at 6 p.m.
