The Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department now has a Fire Explorer Post to engage youth who may become the next generation’s firefighters, paramedics or police officers.
The Explorers will meet most Sunday evenings during the school year, but would have some summer activities, according to Maddison Zikmund, recruiting and retention coordinator.
For example, the students ages 14-20 will be learning about careers in health care April 6. They will learn First Aid and CPR on back-to-back Sundays April 27 and May 4. Next fall they will start covering firefighting equipment and techniques. They will get to put out fires, climb ladder trucks and learn valuable leadership skills.
“A lot of fire departments use (Explorers Posts) for recruiting,” Zikmund said. “That’s not our main goal. It’s more to interact with the youth and inform them about the career paths they can go down.”
Explorers Posts are run through a branch of the Boy Scouts of America, but you do not need to be a Boy Scout to sign up.
