The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office dive team continues to search for a missing 39-year-old Ramsey man after the vehicle he was in drove into the Mississippi River early Friday morning, April 4.
The missing man is Travis Laron Benjamin, according to Ramsey Police Chief Jim Way.
According to Way, a resident in the 6100 block of Rivlyn Avenue called 911 1:30 a.m. Friday morning to report a vehicle in the Mississippi River.
Officers and a boat rescue team from the Ramsey Fire Department arrived and observed a man on top of the vehicle roof.
Way said he did not respond to officers before he fell into the river. When asked whether it appeared he jumped or fell from the roof, Way said the officers were too far away to tell. The vehicle was afloat in the middle of the river about 175 yards away.
The rescue crew found a 42-year-old Fridley man inside the vehicle, but were unable to locate Benjamin. The Fridley man appeared to be intoxicated and was uncooperative with officers. He was taken to the hospital with minor hypothermia, according to Way.
The search continued over the weekend. Cmdr. Paul Sommer of the sheriff’s office said the search will be limited to surface operations only due to strong currents.
