Coon Rapids Baptist Church celebrates half century

Coon Rapids Baptist Church turns 50 years old this year.

The early years of the church formation began in the fall of 1962, when weekly Bible studies were held in the home of an interested Coon Rapids family. Those studies were done under the direction of Minnesota Baptist Association Planting and Watering missionary the Rev. Lawrence Johnson.

In January 1963 the first Sunday services began, and by midautumn that year the constitution of Coon Rapids Baptist Church was drawn up and adopted. Church activities were taking place in the building then known as L.O. Jacob Elementary School.

On Jan. 8, 1964, the church was incorporated with 17 charter members, making that the official start of the church.

In February 1964, members of Coon Rapids Baptist Church voted to purchase 2 1/2 acres of property on Hanson Boulevard to build a church building.

In July 1964, church members called the Rev. Edgar Mitchell to pastor the church. The present parsonage was built on the Hanson Boulevard property and served as both a parsonage and the meeting place for all services.

The official dedication of that property took place in July 1966.

The Rev. Paul Cutler was installed as pastor in January 1969. Construction of a separate meeting building, which now is the education building and Christian School, was completed in 1971.

On Aug. 25, 1972, the Rev. Robert Fuller Sr. became the pastor of Coon Rapids Baptist Church.  Coon Rapids Christian School was added to the church’s ministries in August 1977.

The purchase of an additional acre and the construction of a new meeting place for all services soon followed, and on Nov. 1, 1981, the first church service was held in the present church building.

The Rev. Will Peterson was called as pastor in December 1996.

The new activity center was completed in 2005, providing a full gymnasium and a kitchen for use by the church and school.

In October 2012, Nathan Huston became pastor of Coon Rapids Baptist Church.
