Coon Rapids manufacturing business to expand

A Coon Rapids business plans to expand.

The Coon Rapids Planning Commission April 17 gave site plan approval for an addition to the Spiral Manufacturing plant at 11419 Yellow Pine St. NW in the Coon Rapids Industrial Park.

Spiral Manufacturing, which has operated in an 11,280 square-foot building since 1998, will construct a 7,750 square-foot addition and an outdoor storage area on the 1.39-acre site.

According to Planner Scott Harlicker, Spiral has outgrown its existing space and has been using the parking lot over the past few years as a storage and staging area as well as loading and unloading trucks on 114th Avenue.

The new construction will provide additional manufacturing space and a enclosed storage area, Harlicker said.

Spiral has not indicated when construction will start, he said. The company is entering its busy season right now and will also be continuing to work with the city engineering department and the Coon Creek Watershed District on storm water management requirements, Harlicker said.

The site plan was originally before the commission at its March meeting, but was tabled for a number of issues to be addressed.

Besides storm water management, they included parking and access, exterior building materials and dumpster enclosure and landscaping and fencing.

Those were resolved to the commission’s satisfaction, but one of its conditions includes approval by the Coon Creek Watershed District of the storm water management plan and implementation of that plan.

A preliminary plan, which includes an infiltration basin along Yellow Pine Street, has been presented to the watershed district for its approval, Harlicker said.

According to its website, Spiral Manufacturing is a major North American manufacturer of lock-seam, high pressure spiral pipes and fittings which have diversified applications, including air conditioning systems, and above and below ground systems such as ventilation, dust removal, grain handling and carbon monoxide exhaust as well as dual wall pipe for sound and thermal insulation.

The company has been in business since 1962.
