Twenty-three Anoka Technical College Welding students have already been accepted into unions, including Millwright Union 548, St. Paul Pipefitters, Minneapolis Pipefitters, Boilermakers Union and Ironworkers Union.
“Contractors have clearly stated that the recruits for Millwright Union 548 from Anoka Technical College are some of the best they have seen, and they strongly encourage us to continue these recruitment efforts,” said Travis Beck, Business Representative from 548.
Fifteen of the 21 second-year students graduating this month, six first-year students, and one recent graduate were recruited by these unions for two primary reasons: the students’ exemplary skills and the shortage of skilled workers in his improving economy.
“The instructors are the greatest,” said Sireena Blue, Anoka Tech welding program grad and union recruit. “I had one instructor, the college shop had five and all of them had their own skills to offer, which is perfect because being exposed to various techniques is very beneficial.”
The Anoka Technical College Welding Technology program currently offers two Welding certificates, a diploma and an associate in applied science degree program specifically designed to develop exceptional welding skills utilizing the major welding processes that are vital to industry.
“There is also a need for pipe welders,” said Lisa Glendower, Anoka Tech Welding lab assistant. “And Anoka Tech offers more credits in pipe welding than any other college in Minnesota.”
