Students write about their favorite places

Describing a special place and writing about how that place makes them feel comfortable and happy and why they love it so much, local students penned original essays about “my favorite place.”

That was the theme for the 2014 Coon Rapids Rotary and Anoka-Hennepin Educational Foundation writing contest. More than six dozen District 11 elementary school students entered their work for prizes.

Students’ favorite places included Grandma’s spare room, the woods, a secret fort in the closet, the lake, the canoe – one student even described her own imagination as “my favorite place.”

After a panel of judges read each page of the essays, nine winners and six honorable mention recipients were chosen. (See sidebar for names.)

Winning students read their essays to an audience of Rotary Club members, representatives of the educational foundation, and parents during a May 19 luncheon event at the Harvest Grill.

And then cash prizes and certificates were distributed. First place winners received $25, second place winners got $20, third place winners  got $10 and honorable mention students got $5.

For more than 30 years, members of Anoka Hennepin Educational Foundation and Coon Rapids Rotary Club have invited District 11 elementary school students to participate in a writing contest. A new theme is chosen each year.

Financial sponsors of the contest this year were Coon Rapids Chrysler Jeep Ram, Lexington Manufacturing, Green Bay Packaging, Central Bank, Warner Stellian Appliances, Connexus Energy, and Centerpoint Energy.
