Despite perfect temperatures for taking a dip in the pool this past Memorial Day weekend, Anoka’s aquatic center will open about a week behind schedule.
Excessively cold temperatures this past winter wreaked havoc on the pool, necessitating some work according to Recreation Supervisor Lisa LaCasse. Weather permitting, the pool is typically open in time for Memorial Day weekend.
The pool experienced tile failure due to the freeze and thaw, affecting a 15-foot area where the mortar behind the tile broke loose from the concrete substructure, according to LaCasse.
“Had we not made the repairs, the tiles would have come loose from someone stepping on the edge of the pool or grabbing the edge to climb out of the pool,” LaCasse said in an email. “This was a major safety issue.”
The repairs were completed Friday, May 23 but time was needed to allow for the mortar and the grout to cure.
Staff began filling the pool Tuesday.
The Aquatic Center is tentatively scheduled to open Saturday, May 31, pending a successful pool inspection by Anoka County Environmental Health on Friday.
Pool staff were on hand to sell season passes throughout the Memorial Day weekend. Due to the delay, the city is offering a 10-percent discount on the purchase of two or more season passes, through June 1.
