An old joke calls out Minnesota for having two seasons: winter and road construction.
Snow is no longer in the forecast, so the orange cones are going up.
Spring Lake Park will resurface two roads this summer, Monroe Street, from Osborne Road to Sandburnol Drive, and University Avenue Service Road, from 81st Street to Sandburnol Drive. The work is part of a two-year street improvement project that calls for five roads to be improved.
Contractors started work on University Avenue Service Road the last week of May, paving it twice. A third layer of pavement will be added and the road will be striped in July, according to a construction update put out by the city.
Now that Tower Days has concluded, work on Monroe Street has begun. Contractors will tackle the segment south of 81st Street first. Work should move north of 81st June 30, the city estimates.
In addition to work on city streets, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will tackle a 4-mile stretch of Highway 65 this summer and into the fall. The highway will be resurfaced and receive other upgrades.
Southbound Highway 65 from County Highway 10 in Spring Lake Park to Medtronic Parkway in Fridley closed June 11. The stretch between Highway 10 and 81st Avenue should reopen by the Fourth of July.
Through traffic can follow MnDOT’s suggested detour, taking Highway 10 to Interstate 35W to Interstate 694.
Detours to access local businesses will be posted on roadways; most local traffic will be detoured to Old Central Avenue.
When work on the southbound lanes concludes, they will be reopened, and crews will start work on northbound Highway 65.
