An Andover man is facing three felony counts of murder in the second degree for allegedly setting his roommate on fire. Scott David Yorek, 55, died 1:58 a.m. Thursday, June 19.
Adam John Lilienthal, 29, was charged June 19 and is scheduled to make his first court appearance June 20.
According to the criminal complaint, Anoka County Sheriff’s Office deputies at 7:32 p.m. June 17 responded to Lilienthal’s home in the 1300 block of 137th Lane NW. They found Yorek lying naked on the front steps, his clothing having been burned off.
York allegedly said, “I can’t believe Adam tried to kill me,” and “Why did Adam do this to me?”
Neighbors told police that Lilienthal had a cabin north of Virginia and may be headed in that direction. Two witnesses saw smoke and flames coming from the home and when they approached, a person who appeared to be Lilienthal quickly drove away in a truck. They heard someone screaming and found Yorek lying on the steps, according to the complaint.
The fire investigators concluded that Yorek was lying on or standing near a bed in an upstairs bedroom in the home when accelerant was poured on him or the bed and the accelerant was ignited, according to the complaint.
The sheriff’s office said it had responded to a dispute between Lilienthal and Yorek earlier that day, June 17, but no crime had been committed and both agreed to separate. Lilienthal had been renting a room to Yorek, according to the complaint.
