Blaine’s Blazin’ 4th celebration set

Grand Marshal for Blaine’s Blazin’ 4th parade will be Tom Poston, who is presently starring through July 21 in the comedy “The Odd Couple” at the Friars Minnesota Music Hall Dinner Theatre in Minneapolis. Parade begins at 11 a.m. July 4. A full schedule of amusement at Aquatore Park should provide amusement for everyone following the parade. Fireworks after dusk will climax the celebration.

Boy, 7, drowns in river

Anoka County sheriffs divers recovered the body of a seven-year-old Fridley youth who drowned in the Mississippi River near the Islands of Peace County Park June 13. Witnesses reported that the child was walking in flood waters between the islands and shore when he was swept away by the current shortly after 5 p.m.

The Tuesday special

Among the hundreds of teenagers who volunteer their services to HealthSpan hospitals and other institutions are seven dedicated young people from Westwood Middle School in Blaine. They are part of Sharing and Caring, one of the programs of an after-school service organization known as the “3 O’clock Club.” Each Tuesday afternoon the teenagers spend about an hour and a half at nearby Fridley Convalescent Home visiting the residents.
