Registration open for suicide prevention walk

Pre-registration is now open for the fifth-annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk of Blaine on Aug. 16, which will raise funds for suicide prevention programs.

Check-in begins at 9 a.m. and the walk is from 10 a.m. to noon around the track at Blaine High School, 12555 University Ave. NE.

Participants are asked to collect pledges and walk between three and five miles on the Blaine High School track during the two-hour fundraiser.

Any walker who collects $150 in pledges before the walk will receive an Out of the Darkness Community Walk T-shirt, according to Donna Hayes, event chairperson. She lost her son Tom to suicide in 2009 and started organizing this walk in 2010 because the nearest walk sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention was at Como Park.

The Blaine walk is one of eight Out of the Darkness Community Walks coming up in Minnesota.

Other walks are outside the metro area.

Hayes hopes to raise $25,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
