One-time hopeful governor Tom Emmer is now looking very hopeful for Congress as he soundly defeated Anoka County Board of Commissioners Chairperson Rhonda Sivarajah in the Republican primary race for the 6th District.

After four terms, Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is not running for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The two Republican candidates squared off for a chance at the 6th Congressional District seat in the primary election.

Former state house representative and 2010 gubernatorial candidate Emmer received the GOP nomination earlier this year.

Emmer has served the cities of Independence and Delano as a city council member, and served in the state legislature representing parts of Wright and Hennepin Counties. He and his wife Jacquie live in Delano and are the parents to seven children.

“Thank you for the great support that I have received from the 6th Congressional District to be your Republican candidate in this year’s general election,” Emmer said.  “As I look towards beginning the next phase of our campaign, there are no shortcuts to putting the time in with the residents of the Sixth District.”

Sivarajah of Lino Lakes is a former small business owner married for 24 years to husband Ran. They have two children.

Sivarajah told ECM-Sun that she congratulated Emmer on his big win.

“It’s important to keep the 6th in Republican hands,” she said. “My goal to me, it was important to expand the base and that’s exactly what I’ve been able to do and reach beyond Republicans and brought additional people into the process. That’s something I will continue doing.”
