Veterans celebrate summer with annual picnic

With music and a magician, games, door prizes, picnic foods of all sorts, and a visit from a pair of Coon Rapids firefighters, the annual Coon Rapids VFW picnic was quite an event.

Firefighters came – not to fight fire – but to demonstrate the dangers of unattended cooking and to offer tips on the safest way to put out a grease fire: whatever you do, do not add water.

Also during the event, Veterans promoted Voice of Democracy, an annual audio-essay competition in which high school students from across the country compete to win a share of the $2.2 million in scholarship and incentives awarded the winners.

The Voice of Democracy theme this year is “Why Veterans are Important to our Nation’s History and Future.”
