Putting for Pancreatic Cancer Research to help longtime Anoka-Ramsey instructor Sept. 9

Some may know him as a wrestling coach, some may know him as an instructor of physical education classes at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, and others could know him as a landlord or real estate agent.

was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the spring of 2009. He had surgery and was one of the lucky ones — it went into remission. Unfortunately, it came back, and he is in his biggest, toughest, hardest match ever.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth cancer killer with lung cancer first, followed by breast cancer and colon cancer.

Once Wellner discovered he had this cancer, he set out to help others. With Wellner, his family put on a fundraiser in Excelsior, “Don’t Stop Believin.” They have held two of these fundraisers. Wellner has also had his own fundraising event; last year was the first annual Putting for Pancreatic Cancer Research golf tournament.

The second annual golf tournament will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake. Included in the $125 fee is golf, golf cart, dinner, prizes, silent auction and raffle.

Prizes and items donated by area businesses and community members for the silent auction and raffle will be there for the golfers to try to take home.

After expenses, all of the money raised will be donated to the University of Minnesota Foundation for pancreatic cancer research.
