Marty Haggard will headline the Anoka Lions’ 29th annual Country Music Show at Anoka High School March 25.
Haggard, the oldest son of country music legend Merle Haggard, will play a tribute to his dad, who died from pneumonia on his 79th birthday April 6, 2016.
Marty Haggard toured with his father in the early 1980s, and he cut two records in tribute to his father in 2010 and 2011.
“If you don’t like Merle Haggard, you don’t like real country music,” Haggard has said. “In my book, he’s the greatest country singer/songwriter of them all.”
Opening the show and providing a band for Haggard are Sherwin Linton, of Coon Rapids, and the Cotton Kings Band.
Linton celebrated 60 years of show business last year.
Many know him for his hit song “Cotton Kings,” which jumped to the top of the country music charts in 1966.
He is also well known for his Johnny Cash covers, attracting the attention of the Man in Black himself.
A matinee will begin at 3 p.m. March 25, and an evening show will kick off at 7 p.m. at the high school, 3939 Seventh Ave. N., Anoka.
Tickets are $25 for reserved seats and $20 for general admission. Proceeds support the Anoka Lions Club’s work in the community.
