As Minnesota winter melts into spring, birds are singing and plants are flowering.
Andover High School has chosen the perfect spring musical to correspond with the season’s changeover: “The Secret Garden.”
The story follows Mary Lennox, who is orphaned and sent away to live with her widowed uncle and sickly cousin. Their house is filled with despair, but she finds joy in her late aunt’s secret garden, which she sets to bring back to life.
Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the musical follows young Mary, but also puts a greater emphasis on her uncle’s lost love.
“The music is beautiful and captures the haunting qualities of the story and the haunted qualities of the characters,” director Ann Leaf-Johnson said.
The show plays at Andover High School, 2115 Andover Blvd. NW, Andover, the final weekend in April and first weekend in May.
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. April 28, April 29, May 5 and May 6, and the curtain rises at 2 p.m. April 30 and May 7. The production will be interpreted in American Sign Language Saturday, May 6.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for K-12 students and seniors. Tickets are available by calling 763-506-8491 or visiting www.andovertheatre.org.
