Shoplifter sentenced

A 29-year-old man who shoplifted from Herberger’s in Northown Mall in Blaine was sentenced April 19 in Anoka County District Court on a felony theft charge.

Jesus Herrera Rivera, Jr., of Minneapolis, was sentenced to 90 days but given credit for five days served. He will also be on probation for five years.

Around 5 p.m. Nov. 7, 2016, Rivera grabbed three Michael Kors purses and ran out of Herberger’s and into a vehicle.

Store security was able to describe the get-away car and Blaine Police quickly caught Rivera. During the traffic stop, officers could hear beeping from the security tag still on the purses, according to the complaint.

Rivera was convicted of gross misdemeanor theft in August 2013 in Anoka County, which elevated this new charge to a felony.

SLP man allegedly sold cocaine

A Spring Lake Park man is being accused of selling cocaine.

Gustavo Martinez Tiza, 40, was charged April 13 by the Anoka County Attorney’s Office with three felony drug charges, including two first-degree level charges and one count of fifth-degree drug possession. He made his first appearance in Anoka County District Court on May 2.

The Anoka-Hennepin Drug Task Force on April 21, 2016 conducted surveillance on an undercover drug buy in Blaine. An amount of 26.1 grams of cocaine was sold during this transaction, according to the criminal complaint.

On June 1, 2016, authorities stopped Tiza as he was leaving his home. The police suspected drugs were in the car because a police K-9 trained to find narcotics had sensed the drugs. Authorities recovered 5.45 grams of cocaine during this traffic stop, according to the complaint.

Charges filed in Blaine assault case

A Blaine man is being accused of beating up his roommate and pointing a rifle at him, according to a criminal complaint filed in Anoka County District Court.

Thomas James Meindl, 45, made his first court appearance April 25 on felony charges of second-degree assault and threats of violence and a misdemeanor of domestic assault.

According to the criminal complaint, Blaine police at 2:27 a.m. April 23 responded to the call in the 1300 block of 123rd Lane.

A man told officers that he and Meindl had been drinking a lot of alcohol that evening. They got into an argument and Meindl’s roommate went into his room. He said Meindl started hitting his door with a baseball bat and made several holes. He told authorities he felt Meindl was trying to intimidate him, according to the complaint.

Meindl then entered the bedroom and allegedly pointed a rifle directly at his roommate’s face. But Meindl put the rifle down and walked out of the room when his roommate asked if he was going to shoot him. But Meindl came back without the rifle and punched his roommate in the face and body, according to the complaint.

The victim allegedly hit Meindl with a tire rim from a bicycle to get away and was able to get out of the home and call 911.

Officers saw that the victim’s face appeared swollen. They found a loaded rifle on Meindl’s bed, according to the complaint.
