The Blaine girls lacrosse team went 1-2 in the state tournament last week, losing 18-5 to Eden Prairie, defeating Stillwater Area 11-10 and losing to Cretin-Derham Hall 13-8 in the fifth place game.
The Anoka boys lost 17-4 to Benilde-St. Margaret’s and 14-5 to Eden Prairie to be eliminated in the tournament.
Eden Prairie went on to win the girls state championship. In Blaine’s loss to the Eagles on June 13, Abby Jones scored three goals.
The Bengals responded with a win June 15 against Stillwater Area. Blaine outscored the Ponies 7-3 in the second half to come back and win. Jones had another big game with five goals and three assists. Paige Beebe added two goals.
Sarah Ganley picked up eight saves in the net.
In the fifth place game June 17, Cretin-Derham Hall jumped out to an 8-2 lead at halftime and held on for the win after Blaine outscored them 6-5 in the second half.
Jones, Isabella Erne and Gabby Rosenthal each contributed two goals.
Blaine finishes its season 16-3 overall.
The Anoka boys returned to the state tournament with something to prove, but ran into two strong opponents. Benilde-St. Margaret’s was seeded No. 3 and went on to take second, losing 19-12 to Eagan in the title game.
Eden Prairie was the No. 2 seed and finished fifth after a first round loss.
The Tornadoes scored one goal in all four quarters against the Red Knights on June 13 while Benilde-St. Margaret’s had quarters of three, five, five and four goals.
Samuel Hinrichs, Judson Abeler, Chandler Foerster and Jack Savini scored Anoka’s goals.
In the June 15 loss to Eden Prairie, Foerster led Anoka with three goals.
The Tornadoes end their season 15-3.
