Coon Rapids, Ham Lake make final 16 of Gopher Classic

The Coon Rapids and Ham Lake legion baseball teams were two of the final 16 teams to play in the 96-team Gopher Classic. Ten U.S. states and two Canadian Provinces make up the largest American Legion tournament in North America.

The tournament, held July 7-11, is played at 16 different sites in the Twin City Metropolitan area and each team participates in a pool of 6 teams while playing five games in three days.

Coon Rapids went 4-1 in its pool held at Benilde-St. Margaret’s/Chester Bird to advance to the playoff round. It then lost 6-5 in eight innings to Papillion to be eliminated.

Ham Lake also went 4-1 in its pool play held at Tri-City Maroon/Irondale. In the playoff round, Ham Lake lost 5-3 to Forest Lake.

Anoka played at its home site at Castle Field, going 1-4.

Andover went 1-4 in its pool play in Prior Lake.
