Christmas in August
The Salvation Army Community Center of Blaine, 611-112th Ave. NE held its annual “Christmas in August” party, Monday, Aug. 15 with many young people from the community participating. The events included a horseshoe tournament, watermelon eating contest, swim contests, tug of war and a egg toss contest.

Amphitheater project delayed
The Blaine city staff has proposed no less than 14 restrictions on the amphitheater, with most of the responsibility for crowd control, noise monitoring, policing and cleanup placed upon the developers, Northstar Financial Corporation, who have proposed to build a $15 million, 20,000-seat outdoor amphitheater called Pheasant Ridge Music Center. Last Thursday, Sept. 3, the Blaine City Council voted to postpone declaring the 97-acre amphitheater site a tax increment financing district.

SLP Police Chief Porter retires
Spring Lake Park Police Chief Bruce Porter won’t be chasing down speeders, apprehending burglars, managing his patrol officers or shuffling paper work any longer. Porter turned in his badge, gun, holster and a 30-year career in law enforcement as of Tuesday in favor of a retirement that he hopes will free him from the rigors and responsibility of a job that he has characterized as both fulfilling and demanding.
