St. Francis and Coon Rapids trap shooters took part in their first state clay target tournament at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake. The June 14 tournament was the first to be presented by the Minnesota State High School League along with the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League.
The end of the high school baseball season isn’t marked solely by the state tournament, but rather select individuals that will represent their team in the 40th annual Play Ball! Minnesota High School Baseball All-Star Series at Chaska Athletic Park June 19-21.
Blaine junior Alex Williams was in line to set a new state record in the 100-meter hurdles after a prelim time of 14.22. She beat the previous record of 14.32, set by Richfield standout Jessica January in 2012. A stumble on the wet track at Hamline University didn’t help Williams finish strong, but she settled for an eighth place finish in 17.61 seconds during Saturday’s Class AA finals.
Blaine was runner-up to Mounds View for the Section 5AA team titles with the girls 81 points behind Mounds View. The Mustang boys were 47 points clear of Blaine, which edged St. Michael-Albertville by one point.
Legacy Christian freshman Josh Peterson helped the No. 3 seeded Lions open the Section 5A tournament with an 8-0 win against No. 6 North Lakes Academy in Andover May 23. Peterson no-hit North Lakes, struck out 16 batters, walked one and hit one batter.
St. Francis’ first time through the Mississippi 8 Conference track and field championships yielded some impressive results with the girls team runner-up to St. Michael-Albertville by11.5 points and the boys third with the same number of points as the girls (86) behind winner STMA and Monticello, May 22.
