When the Elk River-Zimmerman skaters were receiving their second-place medals after their 3-1 loss to Andover in the section finals, Andover coach Melissa Sailor fixed a compassionate gaze on one of them as she skated across the rink – her sister Mandy Sailor, Elk senior defenseman.
The Andover girls hockey team knew their school had never gone to state in their sport, and knew they had an excellent chance to be the first, having advanced to the section finals against a team they’d beaten and tied previously.
PACT Charter School can add state tournament entrant to its list of accomplishments after the Ramsey charter school’s dance team qualified for the Class A state dance tournament. The Pantherettes are one of five Class A programs to make it to state in both jazz and kick.
Top seed Andover held true to form, reaching the Feb. 13 championship game in Duluth against No. 2 seed Elk River/Zimmerman.
