Blaine based Fire SC was well represented at the weekend tournament portion of the 30th Schwan’s USA Cup as two girls teams made it to the finals of their respective divisions only to come up short against other Minnesota squads.
Chris Carroll was introduced as the new Blaine boys’ hockey head coach to a standing ovation during a team meeting of returning Bengals hockey players before the end of the 2013-14 school year.
Blaine standout Caleb Butler finished his final prep season in a Bengal uniform at the state track and field meet June 7.
Butler, a three-sport captain for the Bengals, will play football in the fall at North Dakota State University. But before he could turn his focus to the gridiron, he had to give it his all in the throwing events at the state meet.
Anoka senior Max Savini couldn’t write a much better finish to his prep golf days after tying for second place in the Class AAA state golf tournament played at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids June 10-11.
Blaine junior Alex Williams was in line to set a new state record in the 100-meter hurdles after a prelim time of 14.22. She beat the previous record of 14.32, set by Richfield standout Jessica January in 2012. A stumble on the wet track at Hamline University didn’t help Williams finish strong, but she settled for an eighth place finish in 17.61 seconds during Saturday’s Class AA finals.
