The end of the high school baseball season isn’t marked solely by the state tournament, but rather select individuals that will represent their team in the 40th annual Play Ball! Minnesota High School Baseball All-Star Series at Chaska Athletic Park June 19-21.

Blaine junior Alex Williams was in line to set a new state record in the 100-meter hurdles after a prelim time of 14.22. She beat the previous record of 14.32, set by Richfield standout Jessica January in 2012. A stumble on the wet track at Hamline University didn’t help Williams finish strong, but she settled for an eighth place finish in 17.61 seconds during Saturday’s Class AA finals.

Winning close games is a sign of a good team but Coon Rapids head coach Jeff DeJoy has seen his share of tense endings to games this season. The Cardinals are 5-0 in games decided by two goals or less. Though two section games have been anything but close, beating Centennial and Osseo/Park Center by a combined 31-21.

Legacy Christian freshman Josh Peterson helped the No. 3 seeded Lions open the Section 5A tournament with an 8-0 win against No. 6 North Lakes Academy in Andover May 23. Peterson no-hit North Lakes, struck out 16 batters, walked one and hit one batter.

Anoka girls and Andover boys won their respective team titles and will represent the section the Class AAA state true team meet at Stillwater High School May 17. Field events start at 4 p.m. with running events to follow at 5 p.m.
