Coon Rapids/Andover American Little League teams had a number of highlights this summer including the introduction of a 50-70 intermediate program for 13-year-olds.
That team not only won the district and state titles but represented Minnesota in the regional tournament in Michigan with a fourth-place finish out of 10 teams, July 19-24.

In what organizers hope to make a yearly event, a picnic to honor Paul Perez, a longtime Coon Rapids youth sports community leader who passed away recently, is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. July 20 at Riverview Park in Coon Rapids.

St. Francis and Coon Rapids trap shooters took part in their first state clay target tournament at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake. The June 14 tournament was the first to be presented by the Minnesota State High School League along with the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League.

The end of the high school baseball season isn’t marked solely by the state tournament, but rather select individuals that will represent their team in the 40th annual Play Ball! Minnesota High School Baseball All-Star Series at Chaska Athletic Park June 19-21.

Blaine junior Alex Williams was in line to set a new state record in the 100-meter hurdles after a prelim time of 14.22. She beat the previous record of 14.32, set by Richfield standout Jessica January in 2012. A stumble on the wet track at Hamline University didn’t help Williams finish strong, but she settled for an eighth place finish in 17.61 seconds during Saturday’s Class AA finals.
