A Minneapolis-based company whose goal is to let men be men will have its first Coon Rapids event tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 23).

Man Cave was founded in July 2009 by Nick Beste, a 22-year-old student at the University of Minnesota.

According to Sam Krause, an employee of the company as well as a University of Minnesota student, there are thousands of home parties for women such as Pampered Chef and Mary Kay, but there have never been any for men.

“Man Cave is changing that,” Krause said.

“We have a wide selection of products ranging from meats, spices, barbeque tools and wood chips to poker chips, mini keg dispensers, beer mugs and bottle openers.”

The home parties are called “MEATings,” at which men get together and a Man Cave adviser teaches them new grilling techniques, like how to smoke a rack of ribs, grill a beer can chicken etc., and then the men eat the food while chatting and having a couple of beers, Krause said.

“This is a really exciting and unique new company that people seem to really enjoy hearing about because it is something that every guy says they have thought about starting,” he said.

According to Krause, Man Cave is growing at a fast pace with some 220 advisers in the first six months the company has been in business.

Phil Lossing is Man Cave’s first adviser in Coon Rapids and he is hosting his first MEATing at his residence, 10501 Partridge Circle N.W., Jan. 23 at 2 p.m.

He has sent between 40 and 50 e-mail invitations, Lossing said.

According to Lossing, he found the job opening from an advertisement a Man Cave adviser ran on the Craig’s List Web site and responded because he is currently unemployed after driving trucks for most of his career.

“He liked what I had to say so here I am one of the new advisers,” Lossing said. “I liked the products for grilling which is what got me attracted to be an adviser.”

For the MEATing tomorrow, Lossing has a full line of products to sell, including different kinds of brats as well as some beef sticks and possibly a “drunken chicken” to taste test, he said.

He ordered the products through the ManCave catalog, Lossing said. “The products don’t look or seem the same as you would buy in a store,” he said.

“They look like restaurant quality so it’s hard to compare. Even the grilling equipment that I received is way higher quality than I have ever seen for sale. It will last forever.”

Following the grilling and taste testing, Lossing said he is planning to get a game of cards going after 4 p.m. “and let men be men.”

According to Lossing, his goals as an adviser are to have fun showing other men how to grill better and where to get better quality meat and products to put on the grill.

Born in Grand Rapids, Lossing grew up in Wawina before moving to Minneapolis and then Brooklyn Park where he graduated from Park Center High School. He has lived in Coon Rapids for 10-plus years and he and his wife have three children.

According to the Man Cave Web site, advisers are paid commission based on their own sales, in addition to the sales of the team they have recruited to also sell Man Cave products.

At a MEATing, an adviser brings his expertise and an ample supply of free meat to grill for everyone, including all-natural buffalo steaks, jalapeno cheese stuffed chicken breasts, over 30 premium brat flavors and more from the The Kings Stock meats, the Web site states.

“Man Cave sells only the highest quality products, including grilling tools and accessories, premium meats, wood chips and planks, grilling spices, rubs and marinades,” the Web site states.

“We also carry a large array of products for every man’s personal cave, including poker products and home bar accessories.

“Man Cave products are backed by a lifetime guarantee and are competitively priced so every man can enjoy them.”
