After two years of saying no, voters in the St. Francis Independent School District 15 have approved both operating levies requested by the district.

When the unofficial Nov. 3 election results came in, 3,561 residents voted yes on question one, which will give the district $290 per pupil for each of the next five years.

The levy approval will bring in $1.8 million per year.

But the decision was a close one with 3,121 people voting against the levy request.

The question two race was won by an even narrower margin of 3,378 yes votes, with 3,279 voting against the measure giving the district an additional $75 per pupil.

With both operating levy questions approved, the district has avoided $2 million in cuts for the 2010-2011 school year.

According to School Board Chairperson Amy Kelly, question one was approved in all three voting precincts.

Question two carried in Precinct 3, where Andover and Oak Grove residents vote, she said.

“We are very thankful – thankful to our citizen for supporting our children and our schools,” Kelly said. “It’s the most important investment our community can make. I’m just thrilled and thankful.”

Because the voters came out to support education, the district will be able to move forward, maintaining the status quo and voiding cuts next year, said School Boardmember David Anderson.

Anderson said he is elated people took the time to go to the polls.

In his eight years, the board has requested a number of building bonds and operating levies and had problems getting supporters to vote, he said.

There were a lot of district administrators, staff and citizens would went out and informed the residents on two levies, Anderson said.

Anderson said he wants to thank them and the voters for putting education on the forefront.
