A 21-year-old man, who admitted in U.S. District Court that he held up at gunpoint the Coon Rapids branch of KleinBank April 22, will serve prison time.

Neiman Reagis Adams, unknown address, entered a guilty plea in federal court to one count of armed bank robbery. He had been indicted by a federal grand jury May 19.

At sentencing Oct. 28, U.S. District Court Judge David Doty sentenced Adams to 51 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release.

In his plea agreement, Adams admitted taking $7,738 from the bank, located at 3070 Coon Rapids Blvd, and assaulting and putting in jeopardy the life of another person by use of a dangerous weapon.

According to a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) affidavit, at approximately 9 a.m. April 22, a man, later identified as Adams, entered the bank, walked to the teller counter and pulled out a handgun.

He ordered the teller to fill a white plastic garbage bag with cash, to which she complied at which point he fled and was last seen running southwest.

According to the Coon Rapids Police report, from viewing the bank surveillance tapes officers thought the suspect resembled a man known to them who lived at the Mississippi View apartment complex, 11100 block of Mississippi Blvd., a few blocks southwest of the bank.

Officers met with the apartment managers and when they watched the video surveillance that covered all the buildings, they saw a black male, wearing clothes that matched the description of the KleinBank robber enter the 11010 building at about 8:23 a.m., then leave at 8:48 a.m., talk with another black male, look northbound and point in the direction of the bank.

The suspect was captured by video surveillance walking in the direction of the bank, then return and walk quickly into the apartment building at 9:10 a.m. He was concealing his face as he walked past the video camera.

Late in the afternoon, a Coon Rapids Police officer conducting undercover surveillance of the apartment complex, spotted a man matching the description of the KleinBank robbery suspect leave in a car driven by a woman.

He alerted other Coon Rapids Police officers and investigators from the Anoka-Hennepin Drug Task Force and they followed the car eastbound on Coon Rapids Boulevard to the intersection with Ibis Street where a marked squad car initiated a stop for a traffic violation.

According to the police report, Adams jumped out of the passenger door and ran down 103rd Avenue, but he was caught and apprehended on the 1700 block shortly after 5 p.m.

A search found $6,762 in cash on Adams’ person.

A black handgun was found by a garbage can on the 1700 block of 103rd Avenue about 20 yards from where Adams was apprehended, according to the federal complaint.

Following Adams’ arrest, police executed a search warrant at the Mississippi View apartment unit of a known acquaintance of Adams and where he had been seen by apartment personnel that afternoon.

Officers seized clothes that matched those worn by the KleinBank robber.

In a post-Miranda statement at the Coon Rapids Police station following his arrest, Adams confessed to committing the robbery.

Adams was handed over to the FBI for charging in federal court. Bank robbery is a federal offense.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Erika R. Monzangue.
