by Sue Austreng Staff writer For more than three decades, Lucille Elrite has dug deep into the fertile soil surrounding folks’ family trees. The Coon Rapids resident has recorded seeds planted from which those family trees sprouted, noting birth dates, wedding anniversaries, generational limbs stretching from the sturdy patriarchal trunk of that tree and documented acorns of family lore and tasty tidbits passed down through the generations. The National Genealogical Society honored Elrite for her years of diligent digging, awarding her the 2007 Award of Merit, presented during the society’s May 18 ceremony in Richmond, Va. “Over the past 30 years, Lucille has devoted much of her life to helping others in search of their roots,” said Marilyn Anderson, curator at the Anoka County Historical Society. “Since the 1970s she has compiled numerous indexes, cemetery records, obituaries, birth, death and marriage records spanning over 100 years of Anoka County history.” Elrite’s most recent achievement, according to the state’s genealogy Web site, includes a complete list of Anoka County World War II soldiers killed during service. “She has added many reference volumes to the research library (at the Anoka County Historical Society),” said Anderson. “Lucille’s knowledge of early pioneers in the county has brought visitors from all over the country to the library seeking her assistance.” Elrite served as president of the Anoka County Genealogical Society and newsletter editor during the decade between 1986 and 1996. According to Anderson, Elrite has been recognized on numerous occasions by the Anoka County Historical Society for her “volunteerism, dedication to history and assistance with special projects.” Born Oct, 5, 1927, in Cass County, N.D., Elrite moved to Anoka County in the 1950s. She became an active volunteer in the genealogical and historical societies in the 1970s. “Lucille’s many talents and years of dedication have increased the Anoka County genealogical and historical societies’ recognition and reputation in the value of preserving one’s family history,” Anderson said. “Lucille has proven herself a genealogical jewel to numerous individuals spanning across the state of Minnesota and the country.” For more information on the 2007 National Genealogical Society Conference, visit www.ngsgenealogy.org.
