Semi loses load of letters PDF Print
Tuesday, 15 January 2008

Tuesday was not a red letter day for the U.S. Postal Service.

A semi truck and trailer headed for the post office in Anoka lost its load of letters at the corner of Main Street and Seventh Avenue during the morning commute.

Just before 8 a.m. Anoka Police were called to the intersection to direct traffic and assist with the clean up of a mail spill.

As many as five police officers, along with city public works staff and U.S. Postal Service employees, had the mail cleaned up in under a half-hour, said Capt. Scott Nolan, Anoka Police Department.

The intersection did remain open, but traffic was backed up during the morning rush hour. This is a busy spot as travelers connect to and from Highway 10.

A collision was not to blame for the spill.

Late in the day the U.S. Postal Service did not know how the load was lost out the back of the contract hauler’s semitrailer. The mail had been sorted in sequence for delivery and was stored in the rolling plastic containers used by delivery drivers.

“It is under investigation,” said Pete Nowacki, communications program specialist for the U.S. Postal Service.

Local staff had to act fast when news of the spill came in.

“In a case like this we get as many people on the scene to clean it up as quickly as possible,” Nowacki said.

Fortunately it was not a windy day – an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 pieces of mail were loose on the roadway.

“The ground was dry and the mail was undamaged,” said Nowacki. “We were able to get to it right away.”

The spill occurred just two blocks away from the Anoka Post Office, located at 2168 Seventh Ave. N.

Nowacki said the postal service is confident all of the mail was recovered. It was taken back to the sorting center in Minneapolis to be put back in sequence and was expected to be delivered later Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s possible some letters might be a day late,” he said.

Anyone with concerns regarding lost mail should contact their local post office.
