Managing editor A 3-year-old Coon Rapids girl was reported in stable condition this week at Hennepin County Medical Center with burns following a fire in a Coon Rapids apartment Feb. 26. The girl is expected to be in the hospital for up to two to three months, Williams said. According to the Coon Rapids Police report, Jadea’s mother, Amber Oldenburg, was in the bathroom of the apartment unit when she heard her daughter screaming. When she came out of the bathroom, she saw her daughter running down the hallway with her dress on fire. Oldenburg rolled her daughter on the carpet in the hallway in an effort to douse the flames, then cut off her burning dress, put her in the bathtub and called 911, the police report states. Arriving police officers and firefighters found the girl standing by the bedroom door with no clothes on and multiple burns on her body, said Capt. Tim Gilsrud, Coon Rapids Fire Department, in his report. “At this time, the girl was not crying and standing there looking at her burns,” Gilsrud wrote. When paramedics arrived, Firefighter John Fick wrapped up the girl with a dry sheet and carried her with the medics to the ambulance, then held her on the ride to the burn unit HCMC, where she was admitted in critical condition. The fire caused moderate smoke in the apartment unit, which firefighters ventilated. According to Williams, the fire was accidental and is beli- eved to have started from the girl playing with a candle or with matches. Firefighters found a small candle on the kitchen table with liquid molten wax and another candle next to it with more solidified wax, but still very warm, the fire department run report states. In addition, two burned matches were found on the carpet nearby. Peter Bodley is at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |
