, Managing editor Republicans in House District 49B did not endorse Rep. Kathy Tingelstad for re-election to the Minnesota House of Representatives at the Senate District 49 convention Saturday. In fact, no vote was taken, according to Tim Newbold, Senate District 49 Republican chairman. The reason: Tingelstad’s yes vote on the DFL transportation funding bill, which passed both the House and Senate and was vetoed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty late last week. Delegates wanted to wait and see how Tingelstad voted Monday on the DFL attempt in the House to override the veto, Newbold said. Tingelstad was one of six Republicans to vote with DFLers to successfully override the veto. No date has yet been set for an endorsing convention in House District 49B, Newbold said. There were no candidates to oppose Tingelstad at the convention Feb. 23, he said. But Tingelstad, first elected to the House in 1996 and serving her sixth term, expects some candidates to emerge when the endorsing convention takes place. “I assume I’ll have several people running against me for the Republican endorsement,” she said at the Capitol after casting her override vote. “But, good luck. You need to be a moderate Republican to win that district.” Republican State Party Chairman Ron Carey prior to Monday’s session distributed poll results from Tingelstad’s district showing voters placed transportation low on their list of priorities. The Republican Party poll results, Carey said, also showed overwhelming opposition to the transportation finance bill. “It’s very unusual to have a sitting incumbent denied endorsement,” said Carey, who recommended that Republicans in District 49B delay their endorsement. “Kathy Tingelstad can change that by standing with Republicans on major issues,” he said. “I think people want to endorse her and stay enthusiastically in support. But if she doesn’t (stand with Republicans), then they send a signal they’ll look at their options.” Peter Bodley is at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |
