by Peter Bodley Managing editor A man was charged this afternoon (Monday, June 16) with three counts - two felonies and one gross misdemeanor - for driving a car involved in a collision in Oak Grove the early hours of Saturday morning (June 14) in which one man was killed. Christopher Kelly Anderson, 25, Minneapolis, was scheduled to be arraigned in court tomorrow (Tuesday, June 17) on felony criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation resulting in substantial bodily harm charges as well as a gross misdemeanor criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm count, all for leaving the scene. The BMW Anderson was driving collided with a parked, unoccupied Ford Explorer on the 22800 block of Zion Parkway shortly after 2 a.m. June 14, according to the complaint. Jeffrey James Hettwer, 30, Ham Lake, a rear seat passenger, was killed in the collision, while Crystal Holly Baribeau, 26, Isanti, a front seat passenger, suffered a bleeding laceration to her scalp, and a third passenger Troy Michael Peasley, 31, had fractures and lacerations to his right wrist. The BMW was registered to Anderson. Assisting at the crash scene, Sgt. Jake Rehling, St. Francis Police Department, noted there was no blood on the driver’s seat area of the BMW, nor any on the deployed air bag. After unsuccessfully searching the area for the driver, Rehling was driving home about 4:13 a.m. when he saw a male walking on the side of the road at Lake George Boulevard and 221st Avenue. Recognizing Anderson from the driver and vehicle services photographs he had checked at the crash scene, Rehling stopped. Anderson had no shoes on, his clothes were wet and he was out of breath. He allegedly told Rehling that he had been involved in an earlier car accident and had run from the scene, not thinking. He also allegedly told the officer that he had been drinking all evening at a bowling alley with some friends and had tried to find someone to drive his car home. He allegedly had no blood on his clothes. But in a subsequent statement to investigators, Anderson allegedly denied driving the BMW registered to him and that he was a passenger in the rear seat. According to the complaint, a man who lives on Zion Parkway in Oak Grove, contacted Anoka County Criminal Investigation Division June 15 to report that he had received a voice male message in his cell phone’s voice mail inbox from a voice he recognized to be Anderson, an acquaintance. The man alleged that it sounded like his cell phone had been unintentionally dialed and the voice mail captured a conversation involving “Chris” and “Troy” in which Anderson asked “Troy” to drive but he refused and Anderson then allegedly said that he was going to drive.
