Coon Rapids stepped up when it needed to step up big last Friday night during Week 6 of the high school football season to defeat Osseo 45-20 and give it a serious shot at the No. 2-seeded position in the 7AAAAA tournament. Led by senior quarterback Blair Townsend, who scored three touchdowns and passed for two more — his 16th and 17th of the regular season — Coon Rapids spotted Osseo a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, then roared back to score 24 second-quarter points for a 24-14 halftime lead. A 59-yard screen pass for a touchdown to Jerrad Zimmel inside the final 80 seconds of the first half turned a three-point lead into the 10-point cushion going into the second half. And when the second half opened, Townsend led Coon Rapids directly up the field and into the end zone for a 17-point advantage. He carried the final 15 yards and shortly after scored from 14 yards to make it 38-14. The two teams traded touchdowns in the final quarter, but it did not alter the outcome. The victory moved Coon Rapids to 5-2 and dropped Osseo to 5-2 in the Northwest Suburban standings going into the final round of regular-season games this evening, Oct. 15. If Coon Rapids beats Centennial in its regular-season finale, then it will automatically clinch the second seed in 7AAAAA and probably earn a first-round game next Tuesday (Oct. 21) against St. Francis. If Coon Rapids should lose and Anoka wins its final game against Park Center, then it will take the No. 3-seeded position. |
