Staff writer Ramsey Police Department and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division are offering a free identification and driver’s license training. The one day session is Nov. 6, 2 to 3 p.m., at Ramsey Municipal Center, 7550 Sunwood Drive N.W. The program is open to businesses and employees who are required to check identifications before accepting payment for services and goods, according to Chandra Kreyer, Ramsey crime prevention specialist. He wants to make sure businesses and their employees are aware of the problems they will encounter and what kind of trouble they can get into by serving minors and customers who are intoxicated, said Brian Kringen, Minnesota Department of Safety Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division trainer. They can face a gross misdemeanor that could cost them $3,000 and/or year in jail as well as a criminal record, he said. Businesses and employees can also be hit with civil fines and have insurance liability issues, according to Kringen. The city issuing the liquor licenses is expecting the businesses to serve alcohol responsibly, he said. This free training session is offered because “we want to help business and servers to flourish,” said Kringen. The PowerPoint presentation will help people understand their responsibilities, the consequences of serving minors, the liquor laws they need to know about and how alcohol affects different people. “It is not a boring presentation,” said Kringen. Kringen tries to present the information in a fun way, he said. The presentation will also include how the servers can cut off customers and how to spot intoxicated customers, said Kringen. Employees will also learn how to spot fraud identifications, fake checks, acceptable identifications and how to handle transactions with fraudulent identifications.
