Three new legislators have joined the Anoka County delegation in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

They were elected from three open seats on Tuesday’s general election ballot where incumbents did not run for re-election.

And in two of those races, the district switched parties - District 49B and District 51A.

In House District 49B, where longtime Rep. Kathy Tingelstad, R-Andover, retired, DFLer Jerry Newton, Coon Rapids, outpolled Republican Jake Cimenski, Coon Rapids, by 11,146 to 8,520 votes. The district includes the southwest corner of Andover and north, central and east Coon Rapids.

Newton is a member of the Anoka-Hennepin District 11 School Board and before that represented Ward 2 on the Coon Rapids City Council.

And in House District 51A, which includes most of Blaine, Republican Tim Sanders took the seat back from the Democrats. DFL State Rep. Scott Kranz did not run for re-election after one term in office. Sanders had 11,813 votes, while DFLer Shawn Hamilton received 10,679 and Independence Party candidate Daniel Sanders had 2,166 votes.

Tim Sanders is employed as a commercial services representative for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company.

Only in the House District 49A, which covers part of Andover and all of Ham Lake, did the Republicans retain the seat held by Rep. Chris DeLaForest, Andover. Peggy Scott, Andover, won with 13,934 votes compared with 9,523 votes for Ted Butler, Andover.

Scott has lived in Andover for 12 years and is a member of the Andover Parks and Recreation Commission. She and her husband are owners of a small business.

In the other House seats affecting ABC Newspapers coverage area, the incumbents all won.

• In District 17A, Republican Rep. Rob Eastlund, defeated Jim Godfrey, DFL, and Daniel Sweeney, IVOTEMN.net, with 12,448 votes to Godfrey’s 10,212 and Sweeney’s 719. The district includes the city of St. Francis and parts of Isanti County.

• In District 47A, Rep. Denise Dittrich, DFL, was re-elected with 11,693 votes to Republican challenger Troy Buchholz’s 7,977 votes. The district includes the city of Champlin and five precincts in Coon Rapids (11, 12, 42, 43 and 45).

• In District 47B, in a rerun from 2006, Rep. Melissa Hortman, DFL incumbent, outpolled Andrew Reinhardt, GOP, 12,382 to 10,187. The district covers a portion of Brooklyn Park and five precincts in Coon Rapids (31, 32, 34, 41 and 44).

• In District 48A, Rep.Tom Hackbarth, R, won another term by defeating challenger Sharon Lawrence, DFL, 14,053 to 9,328. The district includes Bethel, East Bethel, Oak Grove and Nowthen.
