Managing editor The Coon Rapids High School football program was not only a winner on the field this past season. It was also recognized for its sportsmanship. The Northwest Suburban Conference, of which Coon Rapids is a member, has named the CRHS football program best in the conference in sportsmanship. Indeed, the Cardinals did not just place first in one of the three categories of the conference sportsmanship ranking - it topped all three categories. They were coaches, players and spectators. Sportsmanship scores were determined by game officials. There are 10 schools in the conference. To win all three sportsmanship categories is rare and notable, according to Principal Jeff McGonigal. “We had a good team that played very competitive games,” McGonigal said. In watching the games this past season, there was evidence of sportsmanship at all times, he said. “Our coaches have set the tone and the players have bought into it,” McGonigal said. Indeed, the number of boys that went out for football this past season was 180 compared with 130 the previous year, he said. “It shows that a lot of boys want to work real hard and look classy,” McGonigal said. “It has been a terrific fall.” On the field, Coon Rapids compiled a 6-2 conference record, then won two games in the sections before losing by three points in the section final to Blaine, which went on to finish runner-up in state championship at the Metrodome Friday.
