Staff writer One year ago today (Sept. 18, 2008) two brothers allegedly murdered the girlfriend of the older brother. Both recently pleaded not guilty to this crime, which means the case will move forward to jury trials. Ryan Patrick Boland, 34, of Andover and Timothy Ian Boland, 32, of Robbinsdale were charged in Anoka County District Court Sept. 22, 2008 for murdering Natasha Waalen, who was a 28-year-old Anoka resident. The brothers were charged with murder in the second degree and aiding and abetting murder in the second degree. Both pleaded not guilty late last week. Ryan’s jury trial is set to begin Dec. 1, while Timothy’s trial is slated to begin Jan. 25, 2010. Police were alerted to Waalen’s death at 12:30 a.m. Sept. 19 when a passerby called to report finding a body in the southbound lane of the 16800 block of Tulip Street. About 40 to 50 feet south of her body, Waalen’s motorcycle was discovered, so the initial thought was she had died in a motorcycle accident. However, the Anoka County Medical Examiner uncovered that Waalen had multiple blows to the head and died of blunt force trauma. She also had no cuts, scraps or markings on the bottom of her feet even though she was barefoot when her body was discovered. Police were also suspicious of a red tie-down strap that was intertwined around Waalen’s body and arms. The medical examiner determined that the time of death was approximately 10:40 p.m. on Sept. 18, 2008. After police conducted an investigation, they arrested Ryan and Timothy Boland and they are now in custody at the Anoka County Jail.
