A car traveling at speeds clocked up to 125 mph was pursued by Blaine and Coon Rapids Police officers early this morning (Friday, Oct. 23).

The pursuit began in Blaine when Officer Gabriel Lee tried to make a traffic stop on a silver colored Saab, but the driver sped off.

Lee called in Coon Rapids Police for help when the car was traveling at 120 mph on Highway 10 westbound from Foley Boulevard, according to the Coon Rapids Police report.

When the car exited westbound Highway 10 at Hanson Boulevard and then immediately drove back on to eastbound Highway 10 shortly after midnight, Coon Rapids Police Sgt. Mike Dunkley, in an unmarked squad, picked up the pursuit by activating the emergency lights and siren on the squad.

But the car did not stop and instead drove through the construction zone on the freeway at speeds of up to 125 mph, continuing at high speeds on Highway 10 before exiting at Central Avenue in Blaine.

According to the police report, traffic was light at the time on Highway 10 in both directions.

Once in Blaine, the driver turned off Central Avenue on to westbound 89th Avenue, then south on 87th and Jefferson before crossing County Road 10 at the green light and turning on to the Northtown Service Drive by Cub Foods.

The car went over a concrete median by the Burlington Coat Factory, producing a large ball of fire from the rear of the vehicle, but continued with smoke coming from the vehicle until stopping in the Best Buy parking lot.

The driver exited the car with his hands up, but Dunkley in his report alleged that the driver had a smell of alcohol on his breath and admitted to having had a few drinks.

The driver, 29, was handed over the Lee and booked at the Anoka County Jail pending formal charges.
