The treat, a box full of beef jerky, will be delivered to the members of E Battery 151st Field Artillery, currently deployed in Iraq.
According to Sfc. Andrew Haigh of the Minnesota Army National Guard, the jerky is always a favorite for the troops.
The jerky is also ideal because it provides a good source of protein for the troops and does not spoil during shipping, he said.
“I’ve been on four deployments and this is always at the top of the list,” said Haigh.
The DAV puts together a box to outfit the entire 151st, which is stationed at multiple locations monitoring radar and enemy activity in Iraq.
This is the battalion’s fourth deployment and the second to Iraq. It was given a meritorious unit award for the work done during a 2007 deployment in Iraq. Previous deployments include Bosnia (1996) and Kosovo (2000).
The local armory can coordinate the delivery of items being sent to troops deployed overseas.
The Anoka Chapter 39 of the DAV was formed in 1994 and is now the third largest in Minnesota. The group serves veterans and their families in Anoka, Sherburne and Isanti counties. The chapter currently has 889 members.
The DAV works closely with the county veteran service officers and other local veteran organizations including the American Legion and VFW.
Money earned from DAV fund-raisers goes to veterans and their families, along with programs at the VA Medical Centers in St. Cloud and Minneapolis, and disabled veterans deer and turkey hunts and fishing outings.
Members of the DAV also volunteer by driving veterans to doctor appointments and helping out at both VA hospitals and veterans’ homes.
During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays the DAV provides extensive support to veterans in need.
