Veterans saluted veterans in Coon Rapids on Veterans Day today (Nov. 11).

John Staum (right), past VFW national commander-in-chief, thanks Robert Gosswiller for his service to his country. Staum was part of a contingent from the Coon Rapids VFW who visited Park River Estates Care Center on Veterans Day. Gosswiller served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.

Members of the Coon Rapids VFW visited the two nursing homes in the city to thank the veterans living there for their service to their country and to present them with gifts - a blanket handmade by members of the Coon Rapids VFW Auxiliary and slip-free socks.

VFW members split up into two groups, one traveling to Park River Estates Care Center to greet 17 veterans, while the other contingent went to Camilia Rose Care Center to see the 11 veterans who reside there.

VFW Commander Vern Shereck led the delegation to Park River that also included Marv Roepke, VFW junior vice commander; Todd Lindorff, junior vice president of the men’s auxiliary; Judy Roepke, ladies’ auxiliary junior vice president; Scott Harvey, VFW senior vice commander; Lisa Harvey, ladies’ auxiliary; Pete Peterson, past VFW commander; John Staum, past VFW national commander-in-chief, state commander and post commander; and Eddie Gehling, VFW past post commander.

Visiting Coon Rapids’ two nursing homes on Veterans Day to thank the veterans and present them with gifts has been an ongoing program of the Coon Rapids VFW for decades, according to Gehling, a Korean War veteran and longtime VFW member.

“We thank the VFW for coming to honor the veterans here at Park River Estates and we thank you for your service,” said Diana Olson, social services director at the nursing home.
