The event, dubbed Families Doing Good Together, was the brainchild of Jenny Friedman and was created to inspire family service.
“I just want to encourage families with small children to give back to the community. And this is a way they can do that,” Friedman said as parents, grandparents and children by the dozens worked together crafting greeting cards, making sandwiches, tying blankets and fashioning placemats.
The families’ creations will be distributed to foster families, Meal on Wheels recipients, hospitalized children and the homeless.
The evening activity was the second such Doing Good Together event staged at the Head Start center and Friedman said that many more are in the future.
Having just been awarded a $5,000 UPS foundation grant, Friedman said 10 additional Families Doing Good Together events will be staged around the state of Minnesota.
“We’ll use the money to buy supplies,” Friedman said.
Doing Good Together events are scheduled for Head Start centers in Mankato and Moorhead and more are planned for the coming weeks, she said.
Friedman founded Doing Good Together when she wanted to volunteer with her three children but had a hard time finding family-friendly opportunities to do so.
“A lot of families go through that,” Friedman said. “They want to help but spend so much time trying to figure out what to do that they never do it.”
And so, Doing Good Together offers opportunities for families to do just that.
Friedman promises more chances for local families to do good together from the Anoka County Head Start Center location.
“We’ll have more Doing Good Together events, that’s for sure,” Friedman said.
