No. 4 seed Spring Lake Park blanked No. 5 Robbinsdale Copper 29-0 in the Section 4-AAAAA quarterfinals at Spring Lake Park Oct. 22. Panthers senior Grant Walter continued to make big plays. He not only blocked a second-quarter punt, but scooped up the loose ball and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown and a 29-0 lead by halftime.
For the first time this season, Spring Lake Park defensive coordinator Will Wackman brought doughnuts to help celebrate the Panthers defense’s share of a 52-0 shutout of St. Louis Park Oct. 16.
Before the season Spring Lake Park coach Jeff Schlieff knew the schedule would test his team in many ways.
Spring Lake Park continued to turn its season around with a 41-13 win at North St. Paul Sept. 27. Not only was the win the third in a row for the Panthers, but 41 points equals the previous week’s total (41-20 win against Robbinsdale Cooper).
Two of the top Class AAAAA programs in the state over recent seasons opened the 2013 season at Panthers Stadium and Mahtomedi came away with a 22-15 victory over Spring Lake Park.
Four area schools will be represented at the Class AA State Track and Field Meet after successful performances at the Section 5AA meet held on the same track as the state meet.
