Coming off a 62-50 win over Duluth East in the home opener five days earlier, a revamped Blaine (1-1) looked for its second win of the season against Coon Rapids Dec. 5. The Cardinals (2-0) had other ideas, leading from nearly start to finish for the 53-48 win that saw 65 fouls called between the two sides and a combined 88 free throw attempts.

On the night Coon Rapids honored its 1978 state volleyball championship team, Elk River proved too tall of a task by winning a Northwest Suburban Conference game 3-1 Sept. 19. The Elks came out strong in the first set and built a 2-0 lead winning the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23, although the score was closer than the match felt.
